Oscar Vila Mr. Maza AP English LiteratureApril 25, 2014George Orwell's Animal FarmAlthough Animal Farm is best known as an allegory of the Soviet Union and the failure of communism, George Orwell intended his work to show how human nature inherently and consistently fails to be equal. Through developing a parallel between the story and the Russian Revolution, Orwell is able to use this platform as an allegory of human nature and how human nature will never and can never be based on equality. The novel Animal Farm is an allegory or fairy tale novel, and above all a fairy tale for adult readers. In the novel the author uses animal characters instead of human beings; the main purpose of using animal characters is to be able to drag the reader's mind from real events in the world to a fairytale world. Orwell personalizes all of the animal characters in the novel to symbolize real people or historical figures in society. The novel Animal Farm is a very powerful satire full of irony, all intended to show the effects of totalitarianism, and in particular Stalinism. The story begins with the arrival of Mr. Jones, the owner of Manor Farm. Mr. Jones is too drunk to stumble into bed and fall asleep. The farm animals wait in silence and, after making sure that Mr. Jones is sleeping, prepare for a meeting called by Old Major in the large stable. The reason he called the meeting was so he could share a very strange dream he had with the other animals. The animals do not arrive at the meeting at the same time, the first to arrive are the three dogs, Bluebell, Jessie and Pincher. The dogs are followed by cows, sheep, chickens, pigeons, white goats, a donkey named Ben... middle of paper... the government's promises of pigs have turned into slavery and there is much lament among the masses. These complaints certainly denote a lack of satisfaction on the part of environments that feel less equal than others. The humane version of this has always been industrial action which sometimes ends in clashes with the police while the government fights back in a frantic attempt to maintain law and order. If there had been equality, no one would have reason to complain. The author has done an exemplary job using animal characters to bring out the problem of inequality in society. The novel highlights the effects of totalitarian type of government in any society. The book can prove really useful to anyone who wants to look at the problem of inequality in society from another perspective. The book is easy to relate to and understand.
