In society, most people feel safe and have no sense of urgency that something scary will happen around them. Although these people may hear about the surplus of current events happening in the world today that might be scary, they tend not to worry about it because they perceive that it will not occur around their home. Gang violence among youth is a major problem in many parts of the world today. Young people are forced to accept gang commitments that can be catastrophic for society and themselves. The life of a young person and their family can be changed by the simple decision to join a gang, putting many people in danger of being hurt, however there are still many workable solutions to put these young people back on the right path. When a young person chooses to join a gang it is typically done to escape from their obstacles, as a result they do not know that they are making their own complications worse and also making their parents' problems worse. It is difficult for parents to keep their children away from the local gang. It will therefore be difficult for young people to distance themselves from gangs when their own parents fail to dissuade them from doing so. Kocieniewski of the New York Times points out that “75% of gang youth are less involved in family activities” (3). This shows that gangs break the bond between young people and their families. Furthermore, Simon states that “gangs dramatically change the way your children behave, they become less willing to spend time with the family, and they simply don't spend time with the family at all” (12). This also describes how the life of a gang member's family has changed due to the lack of time spent with their son and the lack of dialogue between them and their son.
