Topic > Analysis of Reading the Bible for the First Time

One idea that was extremely helpful to me was his use of metaphors to clarify the relationship between Christians and the Bible. The purpose of reading the Bible, according to Borg, should be to listen to the spirit of God speaking through the biblical texts and not to read the Bible as a simple 'Word of God'. For a beginner in Christian studies, like me, this statement has a very broad scope that is beyond my understanding at this time. Borg, however, makes this statement easier to absorb with his three metaphors that describe the Bible as a finger pointing to the moon, as a lens, and as a sacrament. In the first two metaphors, calling the Bible a finger pointing to the moon and a lens implies that one should not believe in the finger, but believe in what the finger points to. This clearly supports his naïve postcritical approach because he asks people to believe the truth the finger is pointing at and to ignore the way (here referring to the finger) or path. These metaphors are very enriching as they support Borg's claim that the Bible is a human product. To me they mean that there are no speeches of God himself in the Bible, but there are people who have experienced God and what they believe God would have said or done at a particular time.
