Why Young Men Are So Ugly by Tony Hoagland is a great poem because I think it provides a hidden reasoning as to why a certain generation of people acts the way they do: ways they do it. After reading the title of the poem, I immediately noticed how out there it was, which gave me the idea that the author might be an outspoken person. The title was effective in making me interested in poetry, because it was striking and it was not a topic I had ever read about. Why Young Men Are So Ugly is a poet's explanation of what goes on inside a young man's mind and inside his body, despite what that young man might show through his actions and words. The fact that Tony Hoagland was once a young man himself, and therefore this need for explanation is somewhat personal. Hoagland is motivating an experience he has had, which is why the poem clearly demonstrates a familiarity with the topic. Personification is a whimsical part of the poem and used frequently. The first important and significant example of personification is in the second stanza "Making the metal ring like clubs on iron / like prisoners of a dungeon rattling their chains." (Hoagland). These two lines created an apparent image in my mind of what the author described was happening inside a young man's body. I thought these lines might have been a comparison to the emotions one can feel, a way for the author to explain how he might feel, and they gave me the feeling that he was crying out for someone to understand some frustration. I thought the third verse of Why Young Men Are So Ugly had a lot of hidden meanings and meanings. “That's why the tires squeal at the stop sign/why they raise the bass on the ster... in the center of the paper...... is the most important line of the poem. I think the author used personification here to make the image clearer to the reader and help them make the connection from line to life. The line gives the idea that the author had to overcome his own difficulties in life and describes how he felt in this poem. Why Young Men Are So Ugly by Tony Hoagland is a brilliant poem because it portrays one of society's stereotypes in a different and personal way. I think that by describing in this poem the physical and emotional aspects of how it might feel to go through the things that young men can go through, the author successfully captured my attention with the sense of emotion behind the lines that he wrote. I really liked this poem because I liked making connections between life and the stanzas in it, and then connecting it to what I know about judgment and struggle..
