The responsibility of taking care of your health is meaningful and fulfilling. There have been times when I have doubted myself as I have thought about the magnitude of my responsibilities, however there have usually been simple but rewarding episodes that have reassured me that I am on the right path and have what it takes to be a good doctor. One of the cases was the case of an elderly gentleman who presented to hospital with an ischemic stroke. During my meeting with him the next morning, he appears to be upset that his blood pressure is high and not under control, feeling neglected because he is not receiving proper blood pressure medications. I took the time to explain to him that we did not want to rapidly lower his blood pressure after the ischemic stroke to preserve perfusion to the brain. He immediately calmed down and appreciated the explanation. I had the opportunity to follow him for the remainder of his hospital stay. On the day of his discharge he turned to me and said, “I know you will be a great doctor, I see that sparkle in your eyes.” It was rewarding and reassuring how I could build a relationship with patients and give them a reason to trust me through the means of communication and compassion.
