Racism, classism, prejudice, stereotypes and racial profiling still hide behind what is considered a more civilized society than in 1800. Discrimination is the main cause of identity crises in adolescents as schools across Canada contain many diverse cultures and races. Visible minorities and obese teenagers are often the main targets of bullying and discrimination. Islamophobia is defined as racism that leads to prejudice and fear towards Islamic beliefs and Muslims. This is a new term that was created due to the influence of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Some students, even teachers, affected by prejudice against Muslims, both consciously and unconsciously classified students as Muslim as "evil" and "dangerous". This can lead to identity crisis for Muslim students as they are not sure whether they are truly dangerous and evil. Even if some Muslim individuals possess a logical mindset, they may still buckle under extreme peer pressure and non-acceptance from society. Prejudice and discrimination will lead these students to depression, low self-esteem and self-distrust, which could ultimately lead to serious problems such as suicide.
