NakedDavid Sedaris; Piccolo Marrone & co. 1997 “The women's open”1. Throughout the essay “The Women's Open” David's father's obsession with golf is shown. The power of his obsession leads him to forget what should be important to him.2. Sedaris expresses the heartlessness his father shows towards people and even his sons when it comes to golf. For example, the first day Lisa got her period she was on the golf course while her father was watching a professional tournament, at first while she complained about her back pain he simply ignored her. When he realized the problem, he asked a woman who was as dedicated to golf as he was to accompany her to the women's restroom for a sanitary napkin. He kept David with him so he could run after the skinny tees that usually flew 20 feet away from golfers' swings, just so he could keep them for good luck. On another occasion, Lisa's mother had recorded a video of films they enjoy watching together. After her mother's death Lisa searched everywhere for the video her mother had made for her. He found it in his father's basement along with all of his golf videos. As he began watching the video, memories began to arise until a man bent over a golf course appeared on the screen. His father had recorded a golf tournament on his mother's memories. Sedaris was able to let the reader know how obsessed his father was with golf and the pain this caused the family.3. Sedaris begins with a short passage that foreshadows an event that will happen that day. Start this way to let the reader know that there is importance behind the story. After his foreshadowing he begins with the story.4. Sedaris uses descriptive series of paragraphs followed by dialogue to express what is happening. For example, they return from the tournament to find Lisa lying in the back seat of her Porsche. The first words out of Lisa's mouth weren't very pleasant. “My father sighed and shook his head in disappointment. It was the same way she reacted to my mother when her anger and frustration made her forget herself. Lisa was no longer a daughter now, but just another woman unable to control her wildly changing emotions. "Don't mind her," he said, wiping a thin layer of pollen from the windshield. "He just has problems with women." ”5. I think Sedaris was very effective in his writing. I don't like that... the medium of paper... is what I think he wanted it to be. But in the end, his family has as many financial problems as the average family.3. Starting the first line of the first essay in his book with a command he would like to give to one of his servants is misleading. Sedaris structures his essay in such a way as to make the reader believe that he is rich. But he expresses how he was far from being rich.4. Sedari's language is more than effective, his sentences are full of consideration and snobbish comments. “When they ask me, most people say that my greatest asset is my skin, which really glows! I have to tie a sock over my eyes to sleep at night. Others are like my perfect, sparkling eyes or teeth, my full head of hair, or my imposing stature, but if you want my opinion, I think my most notable trait is my ability to accept a compliment. His conclusion to the story makes up for all the nonsense he talked about before.5. I thought Sedaris's first essay, “Chipped Beef,” was a hilarious arrangement of consideration and fiction. Although this essay is not arranged with the twisted humor present in some of his other essays, it had a very effective way of making readers laugh.
