Case in point, history shows that during slavery Europeans were the masters of the legal institution of slavery and Africans were the journeymen or beginners. Africans worked without pay, as slavery was common in the British colonies of North America and permitted in 1776 during the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. There is no doubt that Europeans controlled Africans during slavery, however they were not masters in the true sense of the word. Train insists that the master appreciate all aspects of the trade and the journeyman obey orders. Before going further it is essential to understand and distinguish between the two. A journeyman is a person who seeks the approval of a guild or association of craftsmen. Acceptance would mark one as a master of that craft. Guildhalls were common in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. In time the Guildhall became the central society of a town. Most of these guild halls were intended for textile workers, carpenters, bricklayers, carvers and glass workers, to name a few.
