The Definition of a HeroWhen I think of a hero, I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and bold. Upon closer inspection, many qualities other than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, courage, selflessness, and the willingness to try are just some of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of the present and vice versa. A person can be a hero for saving the life of one or millions of people. Heroes are not only real people, but are also fictional figures. Children are extremely interested in legendary and fantasy figures as they undertake tasks such as: difficult journeys, challenging dragons, discovering lost treasures, and changing the nature of the world through their singular acts of courage and selflessness. They also endure a lot of resistance, hardship, and danger. Often the hero learns valuable lessons about survival and self-sufficiency. Heroes not only teach valuable lessons, but give the child a sense of belonging. For a child, a hero is an invincible person who will change the world. There is another type of hero that almost no one knows about. In the poorest areas of the country, mainly different ethnic minorities live. Throughout their lives they are expected to work harder and not be successful in life. Some individuals living in poverty with the determination to succeed work hard all their lives to become what everyone doubted they could do. Escaping crime, drugs and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don't go to college. Despite financial problems, an environment of drugs and crime, or difficulties in language skills, the desire to triumph fuels their tenacity. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero that anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes, but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them one day. Plus, you don't have to kill anyone, conquer foreign lands, or risk your life to be a hero. Anyone who influences someone else by saving or helping to save their life is a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a non-violent revolution to liberate his country.
