Introduction Whether the ABC broadcasts sufficiently diverse content to fulfill its original intent is widely debated among modern media scholars (Alexander 173). The creation of SBS allowed the ABC to remain unaccountable in terms of its original purpose of providing high quality, impartial and educational broadcasting for culturally and linguistically diverse audiences. It is critical to understand the original purpose of ABC's creation, where and how ABC failed to achieve this purpose, and how SBS filled the niche left by ABC's downfalls. An evaluation of ABC's broadcast schedule for the first week of May 2012 will be included to provide current evidence that ABC is achieving its purpose. Before we can evaluate the failures of the ABC and why they are actually failures, we must first understand what the original intent of establishing the ABC was. The purpose of the ABCThe ABC is an independent statutory authority whose role and function are established by legislation (Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 1998) . The legislation under which the ABC was established is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983, also known as the ABC charter, which outlines broadcast, programming and service requirements which together aim to provide a sense of national identity through high standards of diverse content ( Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 1983 ).
