Boe establishes some general postures and their practical meanings. Posture can be divided into two categories: open/closed and forward/backward. Within these two broad categories there are specific behaviors that correspond to each category such as: open arms, uncrossed legs and exposed palms for an open and receptive body posture; Arms bent, legs crossed and palms hidden for a closed and avoided body posture (Boe 45). A slouched back and closed body language communicate lack of interest while a slouched, open body language communicates contemplation and cautious interest.
