Self-confidence controls an important part that contributes to the balance a person possesses. Despite this general saying of accepting who you are on the outside, developments in the medical field have made it possible to improve the way you see your external beauty. Since self-improvement has always been pursued, plastic surgery is an inevitable development of society that should not be frowned upon as it has evolved into a luxury that benefits the economy, despite the popular opinion that our culture has become negatively obsessed with outward appearances. The history of plastic surgery exemplifies the idea that humans will always seek self-improvement; plastic surgery has just become one of the ways we might be able to achieve this. Dating back to 800 BC, facial reconstruction was a technique still used as a beneficial medical treatment for injuries. However, people have more problems with plastic surgery due to the mistaken belief that surgeries make you fake, after hearing the word “plastic”. But this is not the case, since the word “plastic” derives from the Greek word “plastikos” – to shape or give shape, (“History of plastic surgery”). The evolution of plastic surgery has confirmed that self-realization is something to be expected from our culture that has turned to cosmetic surgery. The search for the Fountain of Youth by Spanish explorers confirms the idea that eternal youth is a desire that many people hold in high regard.
