Becoming CEO of a company, large or small, is a huge task to take on, but it can be the most rewarding depending on how your company performs. In any case, when you take on such a job, where you are so powerful, you have to think about every single challenge you encounter in your job. The challenges your business will face can range in many different ways, from environmental issues, to social issues, to economic issues and much more. For my company, Staples, I have worked in the store since I was 15, going through several managers. Luckily I got to meet people very high up in the company, like the president and vice president of the company, and I could see how stressful their jobs were. As the CEO of Staples there are many issues that can arise. The first thing that comes to mind is competition. Our competitors Office Max and Office Depot represent our greatest threat in the office supplies industry. Our company owns about 1,100 stores, while they have about 700 each, and they take business away from us every day. We need to vary our prices based on what is popular at that time of the season, such as back-to-school pens, notebooks and computers, and make sure our prices are most affordable for the customer. The second dilemma that comes to mind is geography. Considering we have more than 1000 locations, we need to figure out what locations would be appropriate for a new store. For example, if we only have 2 stores in Maine, we can't put them together, but we need to place them in a somewhat populated location, which would be more convenient for the corporate customer. For us globalization is not a big problem considering we only have one store in France, one in Germany and two in Puerto Rico. The third challenge is technology. Everything is becoming online and on the Internet. Some people can't go to the store every day to get something they need, and every store can't carry all the products. So, as a CEO, your best bet is to put them online so people can shop from home and get the products shipped to their home. Plus, by having staples.com available in your store, if the store is out of stock, you can simply order it.
