Simone sings “my skin is yellow, my hair is long, between two worlds I belong. My father was rich and white, one night he forced my mother to do it. What do they call me? My name is Zaffronia”. Although she knew her mother, she didn't know her father nor was there any talk of rape, but Sarah was still confused about who he was. Coming from two different worlds, as society treats both races differently, was difficult for Sarah. Internally, for Sarah who had a chance in society to belong to two worlds, it seemed that she would only make it if she accepted one part of herself externally, while denying and rejecting the other part both externally and internally. Having that particular state of mind hurts someone a lot, and since all the female characters suffered emotionally, it seems that the character of Sarah Jane is the most remembered. Furthermore, Simone sings “my skin is tanned, my hair is fine, my hips invite you, my mouth is like wine. Whose baby am I? Anyone who has money to buy. What do they call me? my name is Sweetness”. Although Sarah was not directly shown as a prostitute in the film, she was a dancer at Harry's Club and the Moulin Rouge. As Sarah attempted to escape the problems that come with having a black mother, she did so by using her body/sexuality as a way to stay distracted from her reality.
