Topic > Guillain-Barré syndrome symptoms and causes

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an immune system disorder that attacks a person's nerves. The precise cause of this syndrome is unknown, however, stomach flu and respiratory function are caused by GBS which can cause an infectious disease. (Parry & Steinberg, 2007, p. 24). Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare disorder, usually starting with tingling and weakness that starts in the feet of the legs and slowly spreads to the upper body and arms. These symptoms appear after four weeks and begin to damage antigens in the peripheral nerves. Nerves cannot send signals efficiently and muscles lose the ability to respond to the brain, resulting in the inability to feel pain, heat and other sensations (Sharma, “Top Super Specialist Hospital In Nodia,” p.1). Guillain-Barré syndrome also known as GBS, is clinically defined as an acute peripheral neuropathy causing limb weakness that progresses over days or at most up to four weeks. (NINDS Guillain-Barre Syndrome Information Page, page 1). Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disease that affects the nerves. Autoimmune diseases appear when the immune system does not work properly and affects the body's tissues and organs. In this disorder, the immune system's response damages the peripheral nerves, which are the nerves that connect the central nervous system, particularly the brain and spinal cord, to the limbs and organs (Guillain-Barre syndrome, p.1) . Precisely, the immune system's response attacks a particular part of the peripheral nerves called axons, which are the extensions of the nerve cells (neurons) that transmit nerve impulses (Guillain-Barré syndrome, pg.1) this disorder can be the cause of ... middle of paper... ., from http://www.aafp.org/afp/2004/0515/p2405 Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
