Children have been used for many dangerous and inappropriate things throughout history, but child labor laws have taken this phenomenon to extremes. Child labor is the use of children in an industry or business, usually used illegally or inhumanely. It started around the same time as the industrial revolution. In 1810, approximately 2,000,000 children in the United States worked between 50 and 70 hours a week and earned only one dollar. The children who worked in these factories could be as young as 4-5 years old. Child labor laws came into full effect in 1900. The reason children were chosen more often than adults is because they were easier to manage, were cheaper, and were less likely to go on strike. The machines used by children did not require the strength of an adult, so their size allowed them to fit and move in smaller places, unlike an adult.
