It's a question that continues to float around the public sphere: are print advertising and newspapers dead? The world is becoming busier, and while our desire and need for up-to-date news and breaking stories hasn't changed, the way we consume them has. This background report investigates and explains the collapse of newspapers and the technological shift to online news. It will also discuss the divergent opinions on this topic relevant to the future of journalism from a range of reliable primary sources and investigative data. The Fall of the Newspaper The newspaper industry presaged its decline after the introduction of television and broadcast television in the 1950s and then after the advent of the Internet to the public in the 1990s and into the 21st century with its myriad of media choices for people. Since then, print readership has declined while digital numbers continue to rise. This is mainly due to the fact that television and the Internet are able to offer viewers immediate information and breaking news, in a more visually stimulating way with sound, moving images and video. Newspapers are limited to paper and ink and are not considered as "living" as these other mediums. In a study conducted by State of the Media, it is stated that one of the major problems in the newspaper industry is the rapid decline in advertising revenue. As seen in the following data set, while print advertising revenues have declined 58%, online revenues have grown 117% over the past decade. It was also seen that when the world faced a global recession in 2009, advertising revenues dropped dramatically and, in turn, only accelerated the woes of print journalism.
