MKUltra began on April 13, 1953 during the Korean War by order of Allen Welsh Dulles, the director of the CIA. It all began during the “paranoia” immediately after World War II, when fear of communism was at its highest and the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union began to intensify. Furthermore, the operation was a response to the fact that the communist nations, North Korea, the Soviet Union, and China, had their own designs regarding mind control. These nations were also testing U.S. prisoners of war to gain insight into their research. The CIA was led by Sidney Gottlieb, chemist and espionage expert [8]. In his childhood, he suffered from clubfoot and a stutter. Because of his clubfoot, he was exempted from the army but, ironically, in his later years became an expert folk dancer. Additionally, to compensate for his stutter, he earned a master's degree in speech therapy. He also earned a PhD from Cal Tech. During his adult life, he was a contented husband living on a farm with his wife. He grew and sold Christmas trees on the sides of the roads and drank only goat's milk. When he wasn't working on his farm, he focused on the MKUltra project. For example, he sometimes gave LSD-laced drinks to random people and studied the victims' reactions. After the project closed, Gottlieb retired in 1972 noting that all of his work put into MKUltra was a waste and was "useless" due to the fact that no huge "progress" had been made in the MKUltra project [9]. Likewise, the project's goals were to create mind control drugs against America's enemies and find ways to assassinate America's enemies. These drugs included LSD, cocaine, and countless other drugs and chemicals. The people in the chat...... at the center of the paper ......t how it works. Jonestown was thought, after the project's conclusion, to have been a test site for mind control and thought experiments under MKUltra due to the mass suicide that took place there which became known as the Peoples Temple mass suicide and the formation of the Jim Jones cult in that city. Additionally, Leo Ryan was murdered in Jonestown by members of the People's Temple while he was investigating numerous reports said to have occurred in that area. In addition to the Jonestown theory, Lawrence Teeter believed that the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy was the result of the techniques used in Project MKUltra. Furthermore, the lawyer believed that Sirhan Sirhan was under the influence of hypnosis when he killed Robert F. Kennedy. However, he was found guilty of first-degree murder and was executed in a gas chamber six days later.
