Topic > Pipilotti Rist and Virtual Utopia - 1313

In new media there is the desire and possibility of producing new effects on the viewer, of guaranteeing new experiences. Pipilotti Rist seeks the creation of virtual utopias within the limitations of the video medium in installations such as his recent work at the Museum of Modern Art, Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters) in 2009. The work transforms the typically bare atrium of the Museum of Modern Art building in an active environment, where a mutual relationship can occur between the spectator and the projection. Communication between spectators is also an essential component of the work; speech becomes the mediator in the viewer's relationship with the images. The formal characteristics of the work are crucial in their effect on the audience. This is a four-panel panoramic screen, the size of which is 7354 cubic meters is mentioned in the title. Despite its monumental size, the work does not function as an oppressive weapon but rather as a positive force, capable of freeing us from our inhibitions. Rist often experiments with the various ways video can be projected onto surfaces. While it doesn't push the technical limits of the video medium, it still pushes the limits within video projection. Requiring seven different projectors to be connected seamlessly, his work is a technical achievement for this feat alone. A large circular sofa occupies the center of the exhibition space. Its shape is intended to recall the human iris, but also that of the camera. The camera is presented as a living eye in his work, capable of bending and twisting, distorting reality in its own light. It is at the same time a sensual device, which expresses...... middle of paper ...... a work of art. Works Cited Bickers, Patricia. Caress the SPACE. Art monthly n. 350 (October 2011): 1-4.
