Doctors at the New England Journal of Medicine wrote an article about hospital interns who work long shifts in the office. These long shifts can last up to 24 hours. Trainees who are not used to the extended work period are heavily affected. “Each extended work shift scheduled in a month increased the monthly risk of a motor vehicle accident by 9.1%.”(Extended Work Shifts and the Risk of Motor Vehicle Accidents Among Interns 1) These interns are exposed to extremely heavy workloads and stressors that result in tired brains. These tired brains pose an active threat to drivers across the country. They not only put themselves at risk, but also other innocent drivers.
