Problems arise when you try to treat an adaptive problem like a technical problem. This diffuses the problem and does not create sustainable, positive change. When a challenge is adaptive, values, beliefs, roles, relationships and approaches must be modified. A leader will understand this and try to implement an approach to create these alterations in the system. However, adaptive changes are a longer process and may require intervention throughout the process to ensure success. As stated in the article, “you know you're dealing with more than a technical issue when people's hearts and minds need to change, and not just their preferences or routine behaviors” (Heifetz and Linsky, 10). For me, even in relationships and friendships, I have experienced people wanting to take a quick-fix approach to a conflict. However, my mind is more adaptive as I have always identified the underlying long-term problem. As indicated in the text, I searched for “the song under the words”. I knew I wanted to become a therapist because I have the ability to start and see where people are at. I like to stand on the balcony and attempt to analyze the bigger picture to create the most sustainable solution where all individuals benefit in some way, whether as a mental, physical or spiritual learning process.
