There is a universal language: the language of music. Music has a special quality and ability to bridge social and cultural divides. A theory proposed by Dr. Gray, founder and director of the National Musical Arts BioMusic program; describes that music has been around longer than humans have. Music is the only thing that humans from different backgrounds can relate to. Every living creature would agree. Music is heard everywhere, not only among humans, but also in nature, through the chirping of birds, the blowing of the wind, the gentle sound of raindrops against the glass of a window, the rolling ocean waves. they move back and forth and the hum of the ocean flowing in a sea shell. There is no escape; music lives and surrounds us constantly. While there are countless songs that impart social or cultural awareness, this article will analyze and address the dynamics of MIA's “Paper Planes” video. Stylistically, the article will examine the artist's perspective, unique use of lyrical analysis and sound description in relation to its historical, social, political and/or cultural context. This essay will also trace the lyrical analysis and description of the song's sound and discuss how the elements (visually, sonically, and lyrically) interact with the theme of immigration and/or violence.
