In the 1930s, cigarette smoking was considered tempting. The kind of wealthy and beautiful people, who's who, flaunted their smoking habit. The first Surgeon General's Report on smoking and health was published in 1964. In today's society, smoking is not so attractive... It is strange to watch movies from the past when Hollywood stars posed as smokers in an environment such as a hospital, restaurant or airport. As the Marlboro Man rode across the screen in commercials between segments of the film. This has now become outdated. Public facilities have now established no-smoking rules in many establishments, and tobacco commercials have long been banned from public television. Over the past 50 years, extensive research has demonstrated the negative effects of tobacco products, demonstrating adverse health risks to the general population, environmental destruction and serious financial problems. The immediate goal of this discussion is to provide education about these risks and to show the reasons why tobacco should be banned from production and, hopefully, to show how something so destructive was once thought to be glamorous. Scientists continually work to conduct experiments in the health sector, many on the risks of smoking. This work has shown that there may be some benefits for tobacco users. Ulcerative colitis, Kaposi's sarcoma and preeclampsia are some of the diseases whose symptoms smoking can relieve, but modern medicine is still the ultimate defense. The harms far outweigh the benefits, as “smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States and can cause cancer of nearly every major organ in the body.” (Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking, CDC np 1) It is simply not practical to use... middle of paper...
