Abortion is one of the most important debates in today's society and has been a passionate topic for decades. The question is whether abortion should be allowed or not. I generally support the idea of abortion given specific circumstances. If a woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape, she has no moral obligation to carry the pregnancy to term. It is a gross expectation from society to think that a woman should give birth to a child conceived by rape and care for the child as if it were her own. In this discussion I will argue that abortion is permissible if the mother has been a victim of rape. Judith Thomson is a philosopher who supports abortion. Judith begins her debate by stating that “a fetus is no more a human being than an acorn is a tree.” When does an acorn become an oak (Thomson 37-56)? The answer is that no one really knows, there is no direct moment when one thing becomes another, it's like a fetus. When does a fetus become a baby? Thomson uses the “famous violinist” analogy. In this analogy you are kidnapped, when you wake up in the morning you discover that you are tied to a famous violist who will need your kidneys for nine months. It is stated that the violinist is an innocent person with a right to life while parting with the violinist would kill him (Thomson 37-56). I believe that in this case it would be moral to pull the plug on the violinist, even at the cost of his death. You have not agreed to support the violinist for nine months and therefore have no obligation to do so. This scenario can be used to support the victim who has been raped. If you have been raped, you have not consented to sex or have not made a conscientious decision to accept the consequences of forced copulation. Furthermore y...... middle of paper...... unjust aggressor who violated the dignity of the woman. Rape is an act of force and violence, unlike conjugal love in marriage where both spouses give themselves freely in an act of love. The raped woman is not responsible for the action and therefore has the right to prevent the pregnancy or even terminate it through abortion. However, I agree with any argument that state killing is wrong. I agree that killing is wrong from the moment the fetus becomes a human being, through any adulthood. People should not be allowed to take another person's life as this is a crime. I believe abortion should remain legal for several reasons; why women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and especially if they are victims of rape, and why they have the autonomy to exercise this right regardless of state laws.
