Playing sports, including individual sports, can make it easier to make friends. Imagine you are a new girl or boy in town and want to make new friends. It would be difficult to do some in class because during the thirty to forty-five minute class, teachers spend most of the time teaching the lesson, so students are not able to communicate with each other. When the teacher gives students group activities, seventy-five percent of the time the people in the group will not meet each other in any of the other classes. It is different if students play a sport because coaches require athletes to communicate with each other. Practices usually last two hours and five days a week. Pre-game dinner, bus rides and even the bench are places where athletes get to know each other more and on a personal level. It's impossible not to become friends after spending so much time together. Individual sports such as golf, tennis and track and field can also provide opportunities to make friends. For example, I ran track my entire four years of high school, and throughout the experience I not only made friends at my school, but also at my opponent's.
