On May 16, 2014 at 7:30 pm, I had the pleasure and honor of attending The Holy City: The Festival of English Chorus Music at Stanford Memorial Church. Here I saw the Stanford Symphonic Chorus, the Stanford Chamber Chorale and the Ragazzi Boys Chorus; all directed by Joyce Keil. My overall opinion of the concert was that it was absolutely spectacular. Not only was it absolutely amazing to see the singers perform, but it was also the complete and utter grandeur of the beautiful and ornate Stanford Memorial Church. The selected pieces all fell into the category of English choral music, from 1912 to 1953. Furthermore, they were all pieces by Vaughan Williams and Gustav Hoist. The repertoire included The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune (1953), Sancta Civitas (1923-25) and Two Psalms (1912). Overall the artists seemed very collected and united; no microphone was placed on stage for any of the singers, including the soloist. This gave me a more natural and genuine effect.
