Procopius, The Secret History (Byzantine) 1. The document Procopius, The Secret History, concerns Byzantine society. This document was written by Procopius a historian. It was written in the 6th century and is set in Byzantine. He wrote this because he was disgusted by the emperor and his wife Theodora.2. Procopius begins this document by stating that Theodora is nothing more than a prostitute. She goes on to say that she was neither classy nor had any dignity, because she performed on stage almost completely naked. Procopius portrays her as someone who is ruthless and willing to do whatever she needs to do to achieve her goals. Justinian fell in love with her, but was not allowed to marry her due to her social status, because The Quran is a religious document. It was written by Muhammad. It took Muhammad 23 years to write, starting on December 22, 609 AD. He wrote the documents in the Cave of Hira and Medina. The reason he wrote this was because Allah had spoken to him and asked him to write.2. The role of the wife in the Quran is to be inferior to that of the husband. Husbands can take double the family inheritance. I feel like there's a lot of gender equality. For example, a woman's testimony counts as half as much as her husband's, because a woman tends to forget. The Quran is full of sexual passages. For example, a man can have up to four wives, a man can marry a child, and slave women and girls can be used as sexual property for his pleasure. Furthermore, a man can beat his wife if he feels like it and not receive any punishment for it. 3. I think this document explains the role of women in this society. Women were and still are treated badly for the most part. Many women in these countries are raped and held down just to produce. I get the feeling that some people take words literally and others don't. As with any religion, there will be good and evil. I don't agree with little girls getting married, they are still kids. It's a bible. The Quran provides examples of the ways a woman should act in society. A woman should be there for her husband. A husband can marry multiple women and the woman may not be upset. A woman may have a dowry, but it is highly preferable to give a portion of it to her husband. A woman is not allowed to give testimony because she cannot be trusted. I believe that women in this document are treated unequally to men. The Quran is very strict about how a woman can be portrayed and how she should behave. The rules are very strict. A man can beat his wife and the wife can't do anything about it. I feel like some people take this document literally and continue to practice it. In Procopius' document I get the feeling that Theodora simply lived her life without rules and therefore people felt disgusted by her ways and appearance. I think the two documents are very different, because one talks about a woman who is not afraid and can do what she wants, but the Quran is very strict on how the woman can be represented. I think they could be compared though, because Procopius would have preferred her to be more angelic and modest. The Quran explains how a woman must be obedient and modest for her
