Moshe Safdie is an architect who really examines how a building can shape an area. Not just the look of the space, but also its functionality, impact on the environment and impact on the surrounding community. It seeks to engage and enrich communities by creating unique and inviting spaces to meet the needs of each project. (Safdie Architects)One of Safdie's most famous buildings is Habitat 67 (or Habitat). The concept of Habitat began in Safdie's master's thesis. He presented the idea at the 1967 World's Fair, and when it was accepted, he founded his own company to help complete it. (Safdie Architects) A series of carefully designed and stacked concrete blocks, Habitat seeks to create a space where every resident of the apartments has access to natural lighting and a private garden. It was the building that launched Safdie into a highly successful career at a young age (he was 29 when it was built). The use of natural light and intimate spaces within larger vessels have accompanied all of his work, regardless of exterior design. (TED)Thanks to his Jewish heritage and early successes, he established a second office in Jerusalem to help restore the city. (Sheets) In 1976, one of the projects he received was the expansion of the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum to dedicate to the million and a half children who died during the Holocaust. He felt that there were already so many museums dedicated to Holocaust information that he wanted to take a different approach to this one. Instead of old clothes and drawings of survivors, he proposed digging a tunnel into the hillside to a cave below and using images such as photographs and a single candle to convey the heaviness of the children's loss. T... middle of paper... sometimes I don't like the messages I see, pieces like Serrano's Piss Christ convey a message that a Jackson Pollack simply doesn't. Pendulums can only swing so long before they return. The art world, like everything, reflects this. It seems that the reverse has already begun in many ways, although only the future will tell for sure.Works CitedArc Space. 1 August 2005. 1 June 2012. Architect's Journal.
