The colonization of Australia occurred in the period 1788-1990. During this period, Great Britain discovered Australia and decided that it would become a new British colony (“Australian History: Colonization 17-88-1990”, 2014.). It was decided that the convicts would be sent to Australia and used as labor to build the new colony. There are many health determinants that are impacting the health of Indigenous Australians, including; poor living conditions, risky behavior and low socioeconomic status. Many of these determinants impact Indigenous Australians due to the colonization of Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a lower life expectancy than the rest of the Australian population. In 2010, life expectancy for Indigenous Australian men was 69.1 years and 73.7 years for women (ABS, 2010). Data collected in the period 2010-2012 shows that the life expectancy of Aboriginal men is 10.6 years less than that of non-indigenous males and that for indigenous females it is 9.5 years less than that of non-indigenous females (ABS, 2010-2012). an important health determinant for the entire indigenous population. It is known that the majority of Indigenous Australians live in rural areas of Australia which are commonly not close to major cities and amenities. People living in these areas generally have poorer health than others living in cities and other parts of Australia. These people do not have as much access to health services and good quality housing. In 2006 approximately 14% of Indigenous households in Australia were overcrowded, compared to 5% of other households (AIHW, 2009a). Overcrowded, poor-quality homes are commonly associated with poor physical and mental health of the people who live in them. Indigenous people are not ... middle of paper ... way to deal with bad memories and cultural changes (Reser, 1991). Many indigenous people are still affected by events that happened long ago. Alcohol is consumed by many who are known to have mental disorders. Depression is a serious problem among the Aboriginal population and much suffering stems from factors such as pain, shame, worry, nostalgia and anger due to colonization and the way it has changed their daily lives, culture and environment (Reser ). Aussie is an important determinant of health for Indigenous Australians in many ways. Many indigenous Australians are still affected by the invasion and are trying to experience life in a new way than they are used to. Colonization led to many deaths, diseases, wars, violence and lifestyle changes that will continue to make life difficult for indigenous people.
