“When a society is industrialised, the farmer becomes a worker; a feudal lord is liquidated or becomes a businessman. When classes rise or fall, a man is employed or unemployed; when the rate of investment rises or falls, a man renews his heart or goes to ruin. When wars break out, an insurance salesman becomes a rocket launcher; a shop assistant, a radar operator; a wife lives alone; a child grows up without a father. Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both." (Mills P.1) The above quote provides some simple examples of what C. Wright Mills meant by the connection between history and the biography of the individual; whether he is the welder during the Industrial Revolution at the beginning of the 18th century; the poor when the Great Depression hit in the 1940s; the soldiers who sacrificed their lives and the generals who made decisions that changed the course of history during the great world wars. Within each of these historical contexts there were individuals who made choices, no matter how gigantic or small the results, that impacted society at the time and subsequent generations; in other words, Mills said it best: “We have come to know that every individual lives, from generation to generation, in a certain society; who lives a biography and who lives it within a historical sequence. With the fact of his life he contributes, even if in a minimal way, to the formation of this society and the course of its history, just as is done by society and its historical pushes. (Mills p.2) Right now there are individuals going about their day and contributing to society through their actions, the words they say, or even the things that… middle of the paper… bs for people than he took away. Be that as it may, technology has also opened up new paths for society to follow, one can see its influences simply by looking around; Apple, Android and Microsoft are just some of the big names that dominate the world and play a role in my life as an individual and in society as a whole with each passing day. As I briefly mentioned, technology has opened up new avenues for society and the world. As an individual, it has impacted my life because even though my future is not yet written, there are many opportunities waiting for me as I pursue my pursuit in the field of technology. Since progress will only go towards better things, society will continue to grow virtually and also in reality. Works Cited C.
