Laws were put in place so that facilities were adequate to properly care and treat patients. Before the late 1950s and 1960s, people with mental disabilities had little protection under the law. Finally, in 1975 the Law on the Education of Persons with Disabilities was promulgated. This law was what people with mental health problems needed to get the services they needed, such as education. Gargiulo stated that in 1990, "Arguably the most significant civil rights legislation affecting people with disabilities, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (PL 101-336) was signed into law...(2015)" This law allows people with all types of disabilities not to be discriminated against when trying to find a job or an audience
