But Jay Gatsby returns, where we arrive in America and he basically reinvents himself by rejecting his past as Jimmy Gatz by virtue of the fact that he wants to be special and changing the his name rejects his past and his parents as "his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents" (Gatsby Page 83), instead he wanted to represent "all the beauty and glamor of the world" (Gatsby page 100). Jay Gatsby wanted to be considered more than just an average person, he wanted to achieve enough wealth and well-being to be an extraordinary person.
