Human Instinct and SurvivalHuman beings do everything to survive. Humanity can be selfish, vicious, and even animalistic just to survive. All these traits, unwanted in normal civilian life, become necessary when trying to endure certain conditions. When the human psyche is placed in a survival situation, it represses human morality and enters an immoral and violent instinctive state necessary for survival. In incredibly stressful situations, the human instinctive state is necessary to help a person survive. In other words, the emotions that people develop are too much of a burden. Getting rid of this burden helps you stay alive. This is because instinct validates debauched and violent actions, such as those seen in wars. As Paul says in All Quiet on the Western Front: “We want to live at any price; therefore we cannot burden ourselves with sentiments which, though they may be ornamental enough in peacetime, would be out of place here” (39).
