What do the following elements have in common? Dedication, commitment, awareness, fundraising and life-saving programs? Right! The ASPCA! This organization stands for American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They accomplished all of the above and so much more. By providing millions of animals with the proper shelter and care they deserve, the ASPCA is a charitable organization that positively impacts the nation. People can only imagine the horror of having to give up a pet for reasons beyond their control, they would surely be devastated. More importantly, they would like to find a place that offers their pet a loving home and people who care for them like they did. The ASPCA has a reputation that leaves pet owners in no doubt about the safety and well-being of their pets. Founded in 1866 by: Henry Bergh, the ASPCA is the first humane society in America and one of the largest in the world. Henry's philosophy is that all animals deserve respect from all humans and must be protected by law (Henry Bergh). In the early years, dogs were used to pull carts and work on treadmills simply because men could not afford horses, but through Henry's diligent efforts, he helped pass a law prohibiting dogs from working in such environments. The first animal hospital opened in 1912, starting the path that others followed. Because the ASPCA is privately funded and a nonprofit organization, its supporters reach well over 2 million people. It's really impressive! There are three key factors that keep the ASPCA thriving.
