In this film review we were asked to watch the film entitled “And We Knew How to Dance”. This documentary film was released in 1994 and was directed by Maureen Judge. The production of this documentary film was carried out by the National Film Board of Canada. This documentary film is mainly about the role of women in World War I, that's why I titled my title World War 1: Women's roles. Furthermore, this film tells us about the variety of women's experiences during the world war. He tells us about their work and what their feelings were about their work. Say no to plagiarism. The director learned about the role of women in World War I by interviewing women who were there during World War I. Interview 12 women who worked in different areas. The ages of the women interviewed ranged from 86 to 101 years. Their age when they started working was 14 and above, but the minimum age required to qualify for jobs in the war effort was 18. One woman talked about how she got the job even though she was only 14 years old. He said “after I applied I had an interview and they selected me”. Women signed up for the war effort because some of them needed a job or something to do, some needed money, some wanted to serve the country, some wanted to get government jobs. And some were forced by their families to get this job because of their financial conditions or because they wanted their children to help their nation. This film mainly focuses on how women felt while working in the war effort: some women said they felt sad because they were away from their family, some said they felt happy because they were getting paid and were serving their country, others they said they missed their home. Their job titles were different: some were: vad (volunteer aid detachment), some were nurses, some were munitions handlers and supervisor, some were farmers, and some worked as agricultural laborers. The second main thing this movie focuses on is women's wages. . In the documentary, one woman said she was paid 35 cents to 50 cents. The other women said they received $8-9 a week to take home after cutting taxes and paying a portion to the commissioners. The other lady said they were paid about $15 a week. A woman married a man who worked with her in the war effort and then talked about how her check went to her husband instead of her. The pay wasn't fair at all, it was really low compared to men. A woman talks about how her mother took away her entire salary and gave very little back. In the documentary I heard that some of them were eager to get this job, some even received marriage proposals from work colleagues. Some women felt less afraid and shy because men made their work hard by teasing them. The men thought women shouldn't be here, it wasn't in their capacity to serve in the war effort. Also women had different dress codes, dress codes vary depending on their job title. Additionally, women were trained similarly to male candidates, they also wore uniforms andthey marched. Even though they wouldn't be going to actual war, they were still helping in the war effort. So they were taught everything that men did. They must follow the same disciplinary rules as soldiers. Now let's talk about the positive force of this documentary. Personally I think this documentary film is very useful to know the history. It makes learning very interesting and easy. The main selling point is that they interviewed real people who were present in the war effort, so they can experience the real emotions women felt while working in the war. This documentary used Visual and Auditory learning which is much more effective than reading a book. The music makes it even more interesting. The images and videos of the world war make us want to keep watching it again and again. The interview process was truly impressive, the women interviewed talk about their real life experience and feelings while serving in the war. Looking at some of their eyes you can tell that as they gave the interview they felt the same as they did while serving in the First World War. Women should be happy to be in the documentary film. The original footage was really beautiful and showed us women working during the First World War. This documentary did a fantastic job providing important information about women who worked in war. I would definitely recommend my friends to watch this documentary film who are interested in learning about the First World War and the role of women in the World War. While this documentary has some positives, it also has some weaknesses. In my opinion there are some weak points in this documentary film. In the documentary the interviewer did not ask many questions to the women interviewed. The women only talk about general things during the interview, the interviewer should have asked them more detailed questions. I suggest that the interviewer ask more questions of the women who gave the interview to learn more about the women involved in the war effort. The women did not provide all the details of their experience, they only showed the main events. Also, I think they should have shown more original footage of women working in the war effort and they should have shown some footage of men teasing women as one woman spoke she felt uncomfortable and scared because men used to give them a hard time to twist. The quality of the images shown of women working in war was not very blurry, they should have chosen better images. Also, the background should have been better. Some women were sitting in their chairs and some were shown on the couch in their home. I suggest having the same simple background to make the documentary more reliable. In the documentary I also saw that some women were nurses, there was not a single video of nurses treating soldiers or nurses working in the hospital, they had put an ambulance but they could have shown the video of women taking care of the offices and soldiers. They should have also shown some original war footage. Why documentaries are the best source of learning. I think history documentaries are a very reliable source of learning. It is a good source for professors to teach students history, it will make learning easy and interesting for students. Filmmakers should continue to make documentaries about major events that happened in the past that could be a topic worth exploring in the field of history. The researchers said that students learn more information.
