Topic > First Day of Work - The Skillsusa Review

Every year at SkillsUSA there is always a theme. This year's theme is SkillsUSA: Champions at Work, Job Ready Day One. What does Job Ready Day One mean? Well, to me Job Ready Day One means that you already know the materials and tasks that need to be done in your work area. It also means you'll know what to do if something goes wrong. To be a Job Ready Day One, you will need specific skills and abilities. You will need problem solving skills, time management skills, good communication skills, the ability to make decisions, the ability to work under pressure and the ability to accept and learn from criticism. You need these skills and abilities to be Job Ready Day One because if you don't have them, you won't get hired in any job. Say no to plagiarism. These skills or abilities are important because for problem solving skills you need to know because in the workforce employers want you to know these things before hiring you. Time management skills are also important because if you show up late for work you will have to deal with the consequences and also how to open and close your work area. Good communication skills are also important because in the world of work you will need to know how to talk to bosses, managers and customers. To show an employer that you are ready for the job from day one, you need to make sure you arrive on time for the interview. That's when you demonstrate your time management skills because an employer doesn't want someone who is late. You want to appear professional and be ready for the questions they will ask you. When they ask you questions, you want to use your good communication skills because they don't want someone who is rude and speaks casually. If it's a job that involves showing work or projects, you'll probably want to be prepared and have a portfolio and show the work you've done. In my cosmetology class there are many ways we emulate the workforce. One way is that when we have clients we must have good communication skills because as a cosmetologist we always have to talk to our clients and make sure if they like how their hair looks or if they want something different. Another way is time management because in cosmetology if you have a client booked for a haircut and a client wants a pedicure you need to know how long a haircut and a pedicure last and see if they can book the pedicure. Another way is to deal with criticism. In our cosmetology course, everything we do, people will judge our work and see if it is perfect or not. Please note: this is just an example. In the cosmetology room we must know how to do it because if something happens when we cut hair or drama occurs, we must know how to solve the problem without problems. At SkillsUSA they help us prepare to be job-ready on day one in many ways. They help us with time management skills, good communication and other soft skills. SkillsUSA helps us be job-ready on day one by telling us what materials and skills we need to bring.
