I was excited to get into this video. I'm a huge rock and roll fan so I was ready to dig into this video to see what Schweikart had to say about it. I had the same feeling at first that he was an annoying uncle in a figurative sense; but if this had been a conversation I would have looked into it further. Say no to plagiarism. Get an Original Essay The first thing I liked to hear was rock and roll; unlike many genres of music, it was written by children who basically wanted their voices to be heard through music. Show rebellion and speak loudly. It gives full effect to the First Amendment. He exercises his right to freedom of speech and religion through his lyrics, and the noise of the drums and guitar helps him speak out loud to audiences willing to listen. In Schweikart's simple word, rock and roll is "freedom". That's what it is. You write the lyrics and no one can tell you otherwise what you put in them. It comes off as a kind of complete rebellion, but it's actually freedom. My favorite band is Rush, a Canadian rock band and one thing many might find interesting is how two of the members; Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are the children of Holocaust survivors. This to me makes them more interesting because they do what they love as well as making a statement. They actually wrote a song called Red Sector A that's about surviving the Holocaust. Lyrics like "All we can do is survive" and "for my father and brother it's too late, but I should help my mother get back on her feet" really speak to how devastating that point in the story was. Rock and roll is truly the genre of freedom because you can express yourself in any way you want. You can go heavy to bring out emotions like anger, celebration, or pride, and you can also go soft and easy to express peace or sadness. This topic definitely opened me up to Schweikart. I still have full respect for Howard Zinn, but if I had to put connection points with others, I'd have to put Schweikart for that. This video was a great example of how she showed that she has hobbies and interests just like me and isn't ashamed to put something she loves into her history lessons. I definitely have to respect him for that. I hope to see more examples of this later in this course. So far Howard Zinn still gets points for erudition and humility. I appreciate that he leans more on the underdog side of humanity, but who do I respect the most right now? I can't really say because they are neck and neck but for different reasons.
