For many years it has always been my desire to impact the world around me, however, I was faced with a challenge: I didn't know as. Studying subjects such as English Literature HL and History HL has given me essential analytical skills for research. My HL literature course often featured debates which helped me hone these skills. At Music HL I learned patience and self-discipline which I believe are valuable skills for a lawyer. Finally, in our TOK lessons, I continued to learn more about the effects of morality and ethics on law. Furthermore, as a testament to my commitment to pursuing academic excellence, I have received awards in Music for 2 consecutive years and in Mathematics Studies at the IBDP level. My consistency meant that I was on the academic merit list from grade 10-11. After school I participated in the Model United Nations where I debated world issues and gained argumentative skills. These skills I acquired shone through my writings in the 10th edition of the school magazine where I was a writer. I was also fortunate enough to attend Oxford Scholastic Law's study programme, where I was fascinated by the ethics and philosophy behind the law and, more importantly, the cultural and moral implications in controversial areas: death penalty and life sentence. During the program, we were presented with the challenge of organizing a mock trial where we modeled a case held at the International Criminal Court in a courtroom. My experience and desire to learn more about the law was the main reason why I interned at Lexkudoz, a law firm in Ghana where I was able to observe and work on many cases with my supervisor. I became familiar with the different types of law: family law and commercial law. The internship was educational as it exposed me to court rules in Ghana, as well as the daily life of a lawyer. My supervisor also often held simulations to represent the court, which made me feel what it is like to argue a case. Because of the impact it has had on me as a potential lawyer, I hope to attend another internship after the IBDP exam. Furthermore, the urge to fight and defend human rights drove me to join Amnesty International. Amnesty has worked on various projects including a campaign to promote corporal punishment in public schools. Once again, as president of Pen in A Box – a student initiative designed to improve education for the poor – it has made me more sensitive to the situations of others. The satisfaction that comes from every bow stroke and every key pressed has been my motivation to not only be a member of the school orchestra and choir but also the musical director of these two groups.
