Introduction When discussing the term 'celebrity', many people will be referring to individuals who are well known to the public. There are three different types of celebrities who earn their fame differently. There are attributed celebrities, who “are famous for their lineage” (Rojek, 2001). Then there are established celebrities, known as “those who become famous for their talent in their particular field” (Rojek, 2001). Finally, there are attributed celebrities, who “become famous by attracting a lot of media attention or by being associated with multiple celebrities” (Rojek, 2001). Today, celebrities have a huge impact on society, especially millennials, with the help of technology and social media. Celebrities use these resources to share their success and lifestyle with the public, and gain a huge following because of it. The public can constantly watch what celebrities do every day and keep wanting to see more. In fact, there is a specific term that defines an obsessive disorder in which a person becomes overly involved in all the specific details of a celebrity's professional and personal life; this is called: celebrity worship syndrome. To explore this question, a series of scales were developed to assess celebrity flattery. Using the Celebrity Attitudes Scale, investigators surveyed various college students. The results reveal that the scale exhibited a number of psychosocial characteristics. Examples include being more prone to cosmetic surgery and having greater concerns about body image. (Sansone, 2014). Fans don't just observe celebrities, they try to change their lifestyle and imitate the celebrity's lifestyle. Not only do fans try to impersonate a celebrity's life, but many fans develop stalking behavior that includes physically following celebrities around. There have been many reports of fans arrested for stalking celebrities. A known case of this type of situation involves Sandra Bullock and Joshua Corbett. “The Miss Congeniality star was the victim of a home invasion where Joshua Corbett broke inin his house with a camera in hopes of getting a photo with the star. Fortunately, Sandy protected herself from harm by locking herself in a room until the police showed up and arrested the intruder” (Mazza, 2014). The lifestyle and success that celebrities display to the public is an appeal for some fans to haunt their private homes. What some fans would do to see celebrities in person because they see them on their screens is interesting and concerning. The strong obsession that the public has with celebrities has sparked a strong interest in the group. For the purposes of this article, the group will focus primarily on students' obsession with celebrities. The group will also touch on some aspects of the effects of celebrity worship as they relate to the research question. This concept was developed by Randy A. Sansone and Lori A. Sansone, who explained the effects and characteristics that college students get when they worship a celebrity. Research Question This article will focus on the reasons why college students are so interested or obsessed with celebrities. This article will seek to understand the reasons given by college students interviewed for their interests or obsessions with celebrities. Additionally, the team will detect whether certain emotions appear when college students express their feelings when talking about celebrities, particularly the Kardashians. Motivation Social media plays an important role in why society today has a great interest or obsession with celebrities. “The use of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have shaped the way celebrities engage with their fans. Social media facilitates a more direct connection with celebrities, which only fuels the cultural fervor surrounding the world of celebrity” (Rojeck, 2001). With social media, fans feel involved in the lives of celebrities. Because of the personal connection fans feel through the direct communication social media allows, fans dedicate their time to having that ongoing connection. One way fans invest their time in celebrities is by following them across all social media platforms. Fans want to be updated on everything that happens to the celebrity, whether it's a new clothing line or new music, fans will want to know. Additionally, fans want to know what's going on with celebrities 24/7. Fans throw away typical priorities like school and work to keep up with celebrity lifestyles. “US schools have blocked several social networks on their computers because students would become distracted on such sites, instead of focusing on their work. Indeed, studies show that British businesses have lost billions of dollars a year in productivity due to social media addiction among students” (Ta, 2014). It's hard to fathom students becoming less productive in school because a celebrity posts photos on social media. The education students receive is less important or interesting to them. Many parents invest time and money to ensure their children go to school and learn. Unfortunately, due to the advancement of technology, students can access social media from mobile devices. Using technology to go on social media and find out what celebrities have posted has become a new activity for many people. “Being too involved in social media and constantly worrying about what celebrities post on social media sites can lead to an addiction that can harm your health.” (Karadkar, 2015). Student health shouldn't even be a concern for celebrity obsession, but to what extent,.
