He is trying to tell Roger that no matter how many bad things he has done, he can always change and be morally upright. The author seems to be passionate about repentance even as he lets his characters be portrayed as immoral people. But he is quick to let the reader know that one can be a very bad person and change to become morally upright. It describes God as someone supernatural who already knows before being asked. The author is not religious but knows God and through Mrs. Jones explains to the writer the importance of repentance. Langston believes that good and evil are not miles apart. Explaining the crime and making the reader understand that it was out of necessity that Roger wanted to rob Mrs. Jones. He's trying to make us understand that Roger isn't really a bad guy but is just trapped in a very difficult situation. The author identifies situations in which good and evil come into conflict. Mrs. Jones tries to be good to a boy who stole from her. It is human nature for the boy to be punished or taken to the police. Mrs. Jones strives to teach the boy the goodness of being honest. He even suggests that she could have asked for the money. Stealing is an evil in society and Mrs. Jones knows that punishing the boy will not help him. Instead it gives him the choice to distinguish between living honestly and stealing. Langston tries to show that every human being has his own way of associating with other people in a community.
