Child psychology covers a wide variety of different factors that contribute to or are experienced by children and adolescents. As a child, I experienced many traumas and saw firsthand how psychological disorders can affect daily life and that of future generations. As a child, I was the one who held my family together and was a safe haven for my mother, who struggled with depression and alcohol problems. I saw one of my sisters start doing the things my mother had done over the years and I began to understand that my family had a pattern. At this young age I began to wonder why. Why are my mother and sister like this? What makes them think that way? In high school I knew that studying psychology was for me, focusing especially on children and adolescents. Many of them didn't really understand why they were like this or many parents didn't want to believe that their child needed help. Children are the future of our world and they matter. Even though all the research conducted in recent years has demonstrated the importance of mental health and how it affects our children, there are still many stigmas and barriers that prevent these children from getting the help they need. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents and young adults. As children grow, they shape their sense of self, and the addition of a mental health disorder can impair normal development causing potentially permanent damage. I made a commitment to myself to defend our future and each of the kids I cross paths with on my journey. I want to fight the stigma surrounding mental health care and give children the care they deserve. Working in therapeutic foster care showed me how many children have been let down by the system and their parents. Some children were more resilient than others, while some had essentially destroyed themselves. With the right help and guidance, I have seen many of the children in my caseload succeed and have the opportunity to lead normal lives, but I have also seen how some have not been able to recover and are still struggling to make it. their problems. I have now transitioned to behavioral health in a hospital setting and am able to receive one-on-one care with my patients every day.
