Ethnicity is understood as a unique cultural heritage or set of cultural characteristics that are passed down from generation to generation. It is typically known through patterns of language, family life, religion, and even leisure customs. While culture refers to attitudes, practices, customs and behaviors that characterize a group of people. With the world becoming more ethically and culturally diverse, more research into ethnicity, culture and visible minority groups is needed to provide us with insights into its relationship to leisure and how to correctly and effectively plan time activities free when we take it into consideration. The effects of one's cultural or ethnic minority status are evident through differences in the leisure participation of ethnic, cultural and visible minorities. Through research, there are at least six explanations for why differences in leisure participation exist. Two of the first explanations were marginality and the ethnic or subcultural thesis. The marginality thesis proposes that racial and ethnic differences in leisure activities are the result of systemic constraints on their participation in leisure, such as poverty and socioeconomic status. This shows that the leisure pursued by these individuals is the one they are least constrained by based on their status. The ethnic or subcultural thesis suggests that difference is explained by values, norms, and socialization that reflect an individual's distinct cultural identity. These previous explanations have been criticized and have led to two other explanations based on discrimination. The first explanation for discrimination is known as perceived personal discrimination. Perceived personal discrimination suggests that the negative impact on leisure participation is due to the perception of discrimination by others in the leisure context. While the impact of institutional discrimination is related to practices widely used by organizations or communities that are used without prejudice or harmful intentions. In addition to the four previous explanations, two additional reasons have recently been proposed. One is positive emotion or affect that refers to one of the properties associated with leisure participation. Positive emotion or affect refers to participation in specific mood-producing behaviors in order to achieve the mood that individuals desire if they are not currently experiencing that mood. This is because the kinds of moods individuals try to achieve depend on their cultural background. This is evident as many European Americans prefer high-arousal activities while many Chinese Canadians prefer low-arousal activities. Based on these preferences, we would expect greater Euro-Canadian participation in snowboarding than Chinese Canadians who would normally participate in reading (Walker, 2013).
