Being resistant to pesticides, GMOs are created by splicing genes from different species that are combined through genetic engineering (GE), which is impossible to do in nature (The Non-GMO Project). Consuming these genetically modified and more processed foods can lead to an increased risk of disease and even cancer. Most of the time, we don't even realize we are eating these harmful toxins as they are infused into our food without our knowledge (GMO label). Farmers who maintain traditional farming practices and choose to grow organic produce are constantly trying to keep their businesses alive. Larger companies, however, that choose to use genetically modified (GM) seeds make greater profits with less time and effort. Choosing to buy local organic produce over crops that contain genetically modified organisms can not only help you stay healthy, but also keep local farmers in business so they can continue to grow their crops the way nature intended. Although GMOs were only introduced in 1996, the side effects can already be seen: there has been an increase in allergic reactions, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and other toxic risks. While these side effects of GMOs may seem tiny in the grand scheme of things, the lasting effects can be much more drastic. More and more children are suffering from life-threatening allergies, which may contribute to an increase in GMO consumption. Thirty-seven people have already died from the side effects of GMOs, 1,500 have been partially paralyzed, and 5,000 have been temporarily disabled by the chemicals used in harvesting GMOs. These numbers do not include the number of babies born with birth defects associated with the chemical glyphosate. This chemical alone can cause infertility, stillbirths, miscarriages and cancers. Additionally, in animals, studies have shown that GMO intake leads to premature death, mammary tumors, and liver and kidney damage. Furthermore, chemicals used on plants for genetic modification can lead to the production of unexpected specimens that can pose a danger to nature. The GMO proponent argues that scientists use these chemicals to increase the productivity of food or animals or to make them better than the original strain, and the end result can lead to resistance to parasites. However, in the article “Use of Herbicides and Insecticides on GMO Crops Skyrockets as Pro-GMO Media Runs Interference” by David Bronner, the author speculates that, “…we now have huge swaths of the country infested with “super weeds” and “super bacteria” 'resistant to glyphosate and Bt…'. Bronner explains how insects and germs will eventually become resistant to the GMO resistance inherent in pests. Insects and germs will be able to develop their own resistance because they have time and will become dangerous to the environment. Monsanto, the largest producer of GMO seeds, has a history of safety blunders. When planting GM seeds, pesticides and herbicides are used so that these crops become resistant to them.
