Topic > Essay on drinking age - 1098

The minimum drinking age law is twenty-one and has been implemented in the United States for forty years. During the 1970s, some states lowered the drinking age, resulting in an increase in serious drunk driving accidents and alcohol-related deaths. This law aims to protect the younger generations of society and the drinking age of twenty-one is highly effective. Although this law would provide an overall safer environment, people still want to change the law on the drinking age to eighteen. They think that once they turn eighteen and become adults, then they can do whatever they want. The current drinking age of twenty-one in the United States should not be lowered given its effectiveness in protecting adolescents and young adults, creating an overall safer society. Consuming alcoholic beverages at a young age can cause many problems in their present and future lives. Studies have shown that 50% of adolescents who consume alcohol by the age of eighteen become more dependent on alcohol, while 9% of adolescents who drink by the age of twenty-one are highly unlikely to become dependent on alcohol. These statistics clearly show a big difference and the drinking age should definitely remain at twenty-one. Federal agencies have stated how “Research indicates that the human brain continues to develop into a person's twenties and that exposure of the developing brain to alcohol may have long-term effects on intellectual abilities” ( Hanson 1). This shows that drinking at an early age can have many consequences that affect your body (brain). This is a serious and dangerous issue and this law should not allow students to damage their brains. Furthermore, Binge Drinking before the age of twenty...... middle of paper ......of problems (road accidents, fights, etc.). Bartenders and waitresses will also have the right to distribute as much alcohol as they want and it is proven that they do not care about the effects alcohol may have on their customers. Therefore, teenagers will be open to drinking any kind of drinks causing an uproar in the society and not knowing how badly it can affect them. Clearly, the twenty-one drinking age has created a safer environment for families to raise healthy teenagers. that they can live their long lives without having any problems. Drinking at a younger age can cause serious brain problems in adolescents that will later affect their future. Some think they are ready to take on this responsibility, but studies have shown that their emotions and their lives cannot handle it. Overall, lowering the drinking age would be very ineffective and an unwise decision.
