Genetic EngineeringIt is the manipulation of organisms' DNA or RNA to modify or improve the organism. Organism traits can be modified or new traits added through DNA. An organism's genes can be altered through biotechnology. This is why genetic engineering can be considered a form of biotechnology. Genes can be removed, added, or turned off so that certain traits can be expressed or repressed. This can be done with bacteria or proteins. The combinations of traits that form are new and cannot be found in nature by changing the composition of the organism somehow creating a new species. Genetic engineering is used in agricultural medicine and forensic medicine. Genetically modified organisms are known as GMOs. Examples: Engineered children: Known as in vitro fertilization. Through genetic engineering, scientists have found a way to help women struggling to get pregnant have a baby. Fertilization is carried out in a laboratory outside the woman's body. The woman will undergo a process in which she will take hormonal drugs. This drug will produce many ovaries which will be recovered and placed in laboratory dishes. Then after the eggs are inseminated and fertilized. Only a few eggs are chosen and transferred to the woman's womb to develop. Engineered babies are when the fetus's genes are altered to match the parent's chosen characteristics, literally designing the baby of your dreams. Advantages and Disadvantages IVF has been around since the 1970s and many people trust it because of how far it has been developed. Even though it has many side effects on the mother's health, many find it useful. Conclusion: I believe that genetic engineering can be considered biotechnology if you believe in science. It is a way to improve people's lives using cells/organisms. Agricultural medicine could benefit greatly when/if genetic engineering is deemed safe enough and overcomes the risks and controversial issues. It uses technology and biological processes to enhance organisms to form useful products. In this way biotechnology and genetic engineering are linked. Genetic engineering should be part of biotechnology. My opinion is that biotechnology should be further studied and used, but only up to a certain point. There are many extreme cases and many improvements to be made. I believe biotechnology explores and opens new avenues in biology which can definitely make a good difference in our changing world.
