Although some believe that racial profiling does not happen and that, if it does, it is used to keep society safe, it is more accurate to say that it disrespects and mistreats innocent citizens. Every year more and more people are stopped for crimes they didn't commit and are singled out because of their race. Being racially profiled, harassed, and mistreated is something that Latinos, Asians, and African Americans face every day. I believe that people should not be stopped and judged for their physical appearance. This is something that takes away the rights of the individual and is very disrespectful. People start to get stopped for the way they are dressed or worse yet for the color of their skin or the culture they were born into, which is something they cannot change. Some races are stopped and searched more than others. As stated in the article Jim Crow Policing, “an overwhelming 84% of stops in the first three quarters of 2009 were of black or Hispanic New Yorkers” (Herbert 37). How would you feel if you were harassed because of your origins and the color of your skin? Most people are going to get mad and angry and I think we have a right to because it's unfair to be singled out for something like that. Families are discouraged from going on trips because they don't want to be bothered by the police for their image. As mentioned in the article, a Hollywood couple stopped by the police, claims to be racially profiled: "I've been stopped by the police before, but I've never been afraid for my life" (Duke Hawkins-Gaar 1). This was said by Johnson, a young woman who was trying to have a romantic getaway with her boyfriend until they were stopped to be searched by the police, because African Americans....... middle of paper..... ., the police, states that they were racially profiled, “…every time she returns from Los Angeles to her hometown she is stopped by the police 80% of the time and questioned about drugs” (Duke Hawkins-Gaar 3). We should give courtesy to people when they are stopped and observe how much we do so. It is wrong and unfair for us to judge someone based on their race, it makes us look and feel ignorant. I believe we should all be treated equally even if we don't all look the same. Law enforcement must reduce the number of people stopped and searched. We wouldn't want to be judged by completely different people, so we shouldn't do that to others. Works Cited Duca, Alan.
