Topic > What is Myasthenia Gravis? - 1136

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease, in which voluntary muscle groups vary according to the level of weakness. Although this disease affects multiple areas of the body, it most commonly affects the eyelid muscles, causing drooping of the eyelid and/or blurred or double vision. Away from complications in the occipital area, other symptoms include difficulty breathing and swallowing, a change in the eminence of the voice, an increased risk of retching and choking, a weak cough and slurred speech. Anyone of any ethnicity or gender can be diagnosed with this disease; however, it is most prevalent in women between the ages of twenty and forty, with an average of twenty-eight, and in men between fifty and seventy. Antibodies are proteins used by the immune system to detect antigens that attack the body. Abnormal antibodies are present in the immune system of those diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and can be detected in the blood. Although myasthenia gravis can cause a decrease in muscle strength over time, it can be treated with the help of medications, therapies to improve muscle strength, and surgery, aimed at bypassing the thymus gland. (Myasthenia Gravis Fact Sheet) (The Basics of Myasthenia Gravis) When analyzing this rare neuromuscular disorder, scientists believe the thymus gland, because adults with the disease have a thymus gland that is heavy and abnormal. Having a large thymus that helps produce antibodies, plays a vital role in the formation of myasthenia gravis, the gland is rare because scientifically, as one grows in age, the gland decreases in size and is replaced by fat. In a retrospective study of thirty-eight p...... half of the paper ......t in Asians, compared to other racial demographics. Before now, the female/male ratio of myasthenia gravis was three females for every two males; with females having a predominance in younger adults and males having a predominance in older adults. However, things have changed and since life expectancy is increasing significantly, males are more likely to get this disease than females. (Sheth, Kevin) The prognosis for those suffering from myasthenia gravis is quite vivid; the reason is that most can be recovered to some extent from this morbidity. In patients with generalized weakness, the nadir of maximal weakness is usually reached within the first three years of diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, those who survive the first three years of the disease are more likely to reach a stable state or improve their health condition. (Sheth, Kevin)
