Our school district recently put forth the absurd idea that high school sports should no longer be funded. However, I and many other students believe that high school sports have come to benefit students. Sports benefit players educationally, help in the process of developing the ability to set and pursue goals, and promote educational aspirations, closer connections to school, and career aspirations. Funding for high school sports should continue. According to the National Federation of State High School Activities Associations, sports promote “participation and sportsmanship” in an effort to “develop good citizens through interscholastic activities that provide equitable opportunities, positive recognition, and learning experiences for students while maximizing achievement of educational goals.” ”. Being involved in sports in high school helps increase academic success, if sports are not funded, students' grades may decline and they may also be less successful in school.
