Abuse of power in the Catholic Church has been a problem for a variety of reasons. For example, priests and others who use their power for their own gain, and even some cases of individuals who abuse their power, to go against the Catholic Church. Throughout its history, there have been many abuses of power in the Catholic Church. Some people believe that not enough has been done to solve this problem, while others do. As with any issue, there is some misunderstanding. The child abuse scandal is not always presented fairly. The media often presents the Catholic Church in an extremely negative way, not reporting the positive things it is doing. For example, there is a lawyer in California who has filed a report stating that there are many sexual abuse claims that are fraudulent and have been pushed by easy money earned by the Catholic Church, which is generally disliked by those who sit in judgment ( Myrus 1). There are people who take advantage of the vulnerable state of the Church for their own benefit, of which the accused and the Church become the real victims. Furthermore, many victim advocacy groups make a living from this, profiting greatly from the suffering of the Church. Additionally, some of the lawyers representing victims take most of the money awarded to victims. There is a case in which a victim known as GB, “… claims lawyers sucked up $877,000 of his $900,000 settlement” (Mirus 1). The lawyers who have done this are profiting greatly from the victims' misfortunes. Not only that, but some priests are falsely accused. This destroys their reputation and causes great frustration. In conclusion, most people believe that the issue of sexual abuse has not been addressed enough and that further action needs to be taken against abusers. Many are not satisfied with everything that has been done. News outlets reporting on crimes committed by Catholic Church leaders fail to have a fair and balanced discussion about what the Church is doing to correct the abuse of power and crimes that have been committed. The Catholic Church continues to work to prevent further cases of abuse and to correct any past cases of abuse.
