The True Meaning of Nursing Leadership Understanding the differences between the broad spectrums of leadership and the underlying styles that can be used to better facilitate the care setting; we can understand what nursing leadership truly is. By comparing clinical and nursing leadership we can better distinguish what truly constitutes nursing leadership and the specific leadership styles that facilitate these types of leadership. Through personal accounts and research, these forms of leadership will be visualized and broken down and the importance highlighted because without them “there would be no order, only chaos” (Robertson, n.d.). To fully understand what nursing leadership is, you must first understand what it is not, and the clear line that separates it from clinical leadership. Clinical leadership has recently begun to emerge from the confusion of interchangeable use of the terms “nursing leadership” and “nursing manager” (Stanley & Sherratt, 2010). These terms are often referred to as the same thing, and unfortunately, this thought process has often been adopted when thinking about clinical leadership. A clinical leader is someone who specializes in an area of knowledge, a veteran in their field; however, this is not only what constitutes a clinical leader. He is someone who is respected in the workplace for the way he treats patients and other colleagues during everyday and extraordinary situations (Stanley, 2008). I'm not necessarily someone who has been given a leadership role, but someone who is simply a natural leader in his field of expertise who makes people around him look up to him. In their practice they are visible to colleagues and patients as they provide hands-on care and actively in the middle of the paper of front-line nurse managers and professional nurses.
